The arrest warrant on alleged LTTE fund-raiser Emil Kanthan, which was recalled by the Special High Court last month, was re-imposed today.
The Attorney General opposed the extension of the recall since a fair time period has been granted for the defendant to surrender.
It was also revealed that the first recall of the warrant had actually taken place in December 2014.
Alleged LTTE fund-raiser Emil Kanthan's lawyers informed the Special High Court last week that their client could not turn himself in due to the Fort Magistrate's refusal to recall the warrant on him. The Fort Magistrate had refused to recall the warrant after the order by the Special High Court.
However, Emil Kanthan's lawyers had still not appealed against the Fort Magistrate's decision, although they told the High Court last week that they were planning to do so.
Senior members of the government had accused Emil Kanthan of having links with former President Rajapaksa.
It is alleged that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa brokered a deal with the LTTE through Emil Kanthan in 2005 during the Presidential Election. During this election, the LTTE ordered Tamil people in North and East to boycott the election, and a vast majority of the Tamils in these provinces did not turn out to vote.
