President Maithripala Sirisena today instructed to limit the price of a 50kg bag of fertilizer for farmers to Rs 2500.

This came after a special meeting this morning on the controversy regarding fertilizer, chaired by Sirisena.

The opposition claimed that the government had cut the fertilizer subsidy in the recently passed budget proposals. Furthermore, a serious shortage of fertilizer was reported from across the island.
