Sri Lanka Freedom Party members supporting the 'Joint Opposition' are expected to request UPFA MP Dallas Alahapperuma to be appointed as General Secretary of the UPFA, in an attempt to bridge the divisions within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, political sources said.
The SLFP is the largest constituent of the United People's Freedom Alliance.
The 'Joint Opposition' has been formed by supporters of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa within the UPFA. It seeks to function as an independent team in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the name of Minister Mahinda Amaraweera is also being considered as a possible appointee for the post.
The UPFA General Secretary position was vacated following the demise of Prof. Vishwa Warnapala on Saturday.
