The contradictory nature of the evidence given by police on the events that led to Frontline Socialist Party Central Committee Member Kumar Gunaratnam's arrest was revealed today when the Immigration official who testified said that his visa was not extended by government order.
FLSP Propaganda Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said that the official from the Immigration and Emigration Department produced a letter signed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order requesting the Department not to extend the visa. This was recommended considering intelligence reports which said Gunaratnam was engaged in politics in the country, the court was further told.
The government, until now, had denied that there was any reason for Gunaratnam's visa not being extended.
He was arrested on November 4 on alleged Immigration and Emigration law violations.
Gunaratnam was remanded till MArch 1 when the next hearing of the inquiry will be taken up.
