Around 1000 protesters gathered to the northern town of Vavuniya this morning to protest against sexual violence on women and girls.

The immediate reason for the protest was the recent rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl of Ukkulankulam, Vavuniya.

The protesters handed over a petition to the Government Agent in Vavuniya, addressed to President Maithripala Sirisena.
