The Sri Lanka Freedom Party disciplinary committee is expected to convene in near future to take action on the dissident party members, political sources said.
The party Central Committee decided to take disciplinary action against several dissident members at its meeting last week. However, several local councilors who were temporarily suspended publicly defied the party leadership by tearing off or burning the letters sent by the General Secretary of the party informing them of the Central Committee meeting.
Meanwhile, a large number of local councilors met yesterday at Negombo and openly defied the party leadership by siding with former President MAhinda Rajapaksa. The former President openly challenged President Maithripala Sirisena to sack them all if he dares, saying that 95 percent of the SLFP is with him.
