Former President and Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa has postponed the formation of his new political party, informed political sources confirmed Asian Mirror.
Then former President's group has made the decision after the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee made a decision to take disciplinary action against MPs attempting to divide the party.
The Central Committee also empowered the party disciplinary committee to initiate action against any MP, irrespective of his or her rank in the party, who criticises the party's decision and its leadership.
After the Central Committee made the decision, eleven MPs who functioned as supporters of the 'joint opposition', informed the SLFP that they would not leave the party under any circumstances.
Following this development however the Rajapaksa group has decided to postpone their plan to form a new political party under the leadership of former President Rajapaksa, informed sources added.
"We still have enough time. The Local Government election has not been announced yet. So we can form the party after the government announces the election," a stalwart from the pro-Rajapaksa camp told Asian Mirror on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the group is now exploring the possibility of forming a political organization under the leadership of the former President, without forming a party.
