Derana television channel has terminated the services of a TV presenter named Sankha Amarajith Perera who made abusive remarks on Soprano Kishani Jayasinghe who performed at the independence day cultural show.
Jayasinghe sang the song 'Danno Budungey" a song penned by legendary artiste John de Silva during the 1920s. Her opera style adaptation of the song was greeted with mixed reactions by the Sri Lankan audience.
However, during a morning newspaper show the presenter ridiculed the internationally acclaimed singer saying her voice was similar to that of a "cat crying in the night. "
He also said that when cats make such noises people hit them with bricks, indicating that the world renowned soprano should also be treated in the same manner.
Many critiques said the presenter's remarks represented a poor taste and his remarks were offensive. They asserted that the announcer's remarks bordered on a 'public insult'.
However, another presented who hosted the same show a few days later apologized to their viewers for making offensive remarks against the Sri Lankan singer.
However, multiple sources from the company on Sunday confirmed that the TV Channel has taken measures to terminate the services of the announcer who made abusive remarks.
