The 'Joint Opposition', which backs former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, started a coconut breaking ritual this morning at Seenigama Devalaya, appealing to the deities to intervene against the police Financial Crimes Investigations Division.

One hundred thousand coconuts are to be broken as an appeal to the deities against the FCID.

Several MPs of the 'Joint Opposition' including Dinesh Gunawardena, Bandula Gunawardena, Jayantha Samaraweera, C.B. Rathnayake and Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena joined the ritual.

The 'Joint Opposition' has continued to contest the legality of the police FCID from its inception one year ago.
