Sri Lanka will publicly destroy seized ivory worth Rs 368 million tomorrow at the Galle Face Greens, to coincide with the International Customs Day.
The ivory was seized in 2012 by the Sri Lanka Customs. The total weight of the ivory is around 1500 kg.
The ivory had been obtained from African elephants.
Elephant ivory trade remains a serious threat to the animals in Africa as well as Asia. Hong Kong remains a bastion of legal ivory trade. However, two weeks ago, its government announced that it will phase out legal ivory trade.
