Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with Sri Lanka's new Ambassador to Iran Y.K.A. Rohanjith on Sunday said he expects positive changes in the diplomatic relations between Tehran and Colombo.

"The two countries' relations should expand on the basis of the existing capacities after the nuclear agreement and the newly created opportunities," Rouhani said during the meeting in Tehran today.

The Iranian president expressed the hope that the two countries' economic ties would further broaden and the two governments' all-out relations in line with their national and regional interests.

The Sri Lankan ambassador, for his part, lauded Iran as a great country with a several-thousand-year-old culture and civilization, and said, "Sri Lanka is determined to further develop its friendly ties with Iran."

Ambassador Rohanjith reiterated Iran's important role in the region and the world, and said, "Sri Lanka welcomes the nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers and it is looking for diversity in the two countries' cooperation."

In relevant remarks in January, Rouhani said that Tehran is resolved to strengthen its ties with friendly nations, including Sri Lanka.

In a message to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, President Rouhani extended his congratulations to Sirisena on his election as the country's president, and expressed the hope that the bilateral relations between Tehran and Colombo would witness further enhancement in his tenure.

"I sincerely congratulate Your Excellency's election as the president of the friend country, Sri Lanka," wrote President Rouhani in his message.

Iran and Sri Lanka have had official diplomatic relations since 1961.

Currently, two Iranian companies are working on two important projects of dam construction and rural electricity in Sri Lanka.
