Former MP Harin Fernando has expressed disappointment over what he described as "favouritism" in the enforcement of election laws, following his arrest by the Badulla Police in connection with an alleged election law violation during the recent general elections.
Posting on his profile on 'X' (formerly Twitter), Fernando shared two pictures: one of his controversial campaign event on 11 November and another of a campaign by National People's Power (NPP) supporters in Badulla. He commented:
"One country, two laws. Both happened in Badulla—one group arrested, the others in government and free."
According to the police, Fernando was taken into custody earlier today after providing a statement at the Badulla Police Station.
The incident in question occurred on 11 November, when tensions arose during a campaign event involving Fernando's group and police officers. The group was accused of violating election laws, reportedly wearing t-shirts styled after Argentine football star Lionel Messi's iconic attire.
During a heated exchange with police at the event, Fernando was heard saying to an officer, "I'll see you after the election, if I win."
