Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Bodh Gaya on Saturday morning amid tight security and participated in the concluding ceremony of a three-day conclave on International Buddhist confederation in which delegates from 47 countries, including former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, too have come to attend.
PM Modi along with Bihar Governor reached Mahabodhi temple and offered prayer there for few minutes. Later, he sat beneath the holy Buddhist tree along with foreign delegates for meditation.
Earlier, the Nitish Kumar government sent one of the cabinet minister and minister in-charge of Gaya, Shyam Rajak, to receive the Prime Minister at the Gaya airport. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar was not present on the occasion in Gaya.
An elaborate security arrangement has been made during Modi's Bodh Gaya visit since the Maoist rebels in India had called for a ‘bandh’ of Magadh in view of the visit.
Modi and Kumaratunga spoke on the inaugural session of the three day conference which was held in New Delhi on Thursday.
