A protest was held at Sooriyawewa town against the decision to store paddy at the unused warehouses at Mattala International Airport.

Southern Provincial Councilors Ajith Rajapaksha and Kapila Dissanayake took part in the protest along with Sooriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman A.J. Janaka and Deputy Chairman Sugath Gamini.

Around 500 people took part, raising black flags in protest over the government's decision. Most of the shops in the town were closed. The shop owners rejected requests made by the police to open the shops.
