Social media users have responded to the death of a Syrian toddler who was found washed up on a Turkish beach by creating artwork depicting him as an angel and aiming attacks at the perceived inaction of the international community.

Syrian refugees Galip Kurdi, five, and his three-year-old brother Aylan died after their overcrowded dinghy sank trying to reach the Greek island of Kos. The pair and their mother, who also died, were trying to flee Isis-held Kobane for Europe.

The pictures of the brothers’ tiny lifeless bodies on Ali Hoca Point Beach shocked the world. One photograph, in which Aylan lies face-down, his head partially in the water, has fast become the defining image of the refugee crisis.

On social media, users have been showing their grief and anger by creating artwork based on that photo.
