The cabinet has approved to change the provision under Kadyan law which requires the parents of a bride to give consent to the marriage.
According to Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the cabinet has given the nod to go ahead with the legal reform.
Rajapakshe said this provision in the Kandyan personal law violates Sri Lanka’s common law. He also said provisions relating to the registration of marriage will also see necessary changes soon.
Kandyan law is the customary law that originates from Sri Lanka’s last Kingdom of Kandy, which is applicable to Sri Lankans who are Buddhist and from the former provinces of the Kandyan Kingdom.
