Parliament will convene in a special session at 2p.m. today to debate the removal of Mohan Peiris as Chief Justice.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made a special statement on the matter on January 30. The opposition demanded a debate on the statement which the government denied on that day.
However, the Prime Minister later informed the speaker of the matter and it had been decided to convene the parliament in a special session.
The government argued that the removal of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake was not done according to the legal procedure and therefore her removal was illegal and Mohan Peiris's appointment was null and void. However, the opposition members oppose this argument.
Former Cabinet Spokesperson Kehelliya Rambukwella told BBC Sandeshaya yesterday that the then opposition did not point out any flow in the procedure but only opposed the removal of Shirani Bandaranayake in principle.
