Sri Lanka is holding its 2024 Parliamentary election today, with over 17 million citizens eligible to vote. Polling stations across the island will open at 7:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM.
A total of 13,421 polling stations have been set up, and 17,140,354 voters are expected to participate in the election. The Gampaha electoral district has the highest number of voters, with 1,881,129 eligible voters, while the Mannar district has the lowest, with 91,607 eligible voters.
The Sri Lankan Parliament consists of 225 seats, with 196 members elected through the parliamentary vote and 29 appointed via the national list. A total of 8,361 candidates are vying for the seats, including 5,006 representing political parties and 3,346 running as independents.
To ensure a smooth voting process, the National Election Commission has set up 2,034 vote counting centers across the country, and approximately 200,000 state-sector employees have been deployed for election duties.
