President Maithripala Sirisena accepted Shirani Bandaranayake as the legal Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
“Mr. President accepts Shirani Bandaranayake as the legal Chief Justice,” President Sirisena tweeted from his official Twitter account, a short while ago.
In his election manifesto, President Sirisena said that CJ 43 Shirani Bandaranayake will be reinstated in her position as the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
This morning, the President and his Cabinet acknowledged Bandaranayake’s right to resume duties as the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka as her impeachment was flawed and there illegal. The President also sent “marching orders” to CJ 44 Mohan Peiris to leave office, making way for Shirani Bandaranayake.
However, President Sirisena was also among UPFA Parliamentarians who voted for the impeachment of CJ 43 Shirani Bandaranayake.
