Minister of External Affairs Mangala Samaraweera said that the Executive Powers of Presidency will be abolished by February.
Speaking at a gathering in Matara, Minister Samaraweera said that the government will take steps to completely revise the Executive Presidency and remove all excessive executive powers of the Presidency.
“It is unnecessary for a single person to have such powers beyond measure; we have seen how such unconditional power can lead to corruption”, Samaraweera said.
In his speech the Minister asserted that along with the abolition of Executive powers, the new government intends to reinstate the state sector to its former glory.
“The Police, the legal system of the country and the state sector took a massive blow from the dictatorial regime. It also hampered the country's wellbeing”, he said.
Samaraweera added that after the 100 days programme, the country’s election system will also be amended and the national government they formed on January 9 will be further strengthen after the General Election.
