Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa officially announced that he has resigned from his position as the Leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

Rajapaksa has handed over his official letter of resignation to SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa today.

President Maithripala Sirisena will be appointed as the new Leader of SLFP today evening by the Central Committee and the Executive Committee of the party.
