The National Advisory Council, which was scheduled to meet on January 12 according to the 100 Day Program of the Maithripala Sirisena government, held its first meeting today.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake confirmed that the first meeting of the National Advisory Committee had its first meeting this evening.
The council has discussed on the constitutional reforms and the timetable according to which the changes will be tabled at the parliament.
The council has also discussed other legislations such as the Right to Information Act and the National Pharmaceutical Policy Act proposed by the 100 day program.
Furthermore, the Advisory Council has paid attention to bringing to justice those who were accused of corruption. It also discussed on establishing an institution to prevent such malpractices from taking place in the future especially through a powerful Commission of Auditing.
The Advisory Council, which was scheduled to meet on January 12, got delayed in meeting due to the majority issue the new government had faced in the parliament. However, with the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa conceding the chairmanship of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to the new president Maithripala Sirisena, the majority issue has now been sorted out.
Leaders of political parties including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had attended the first meeting of the council this evening.
