UNP Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake revealed that he is the mysterious caller “Matara Sunil” who called a political talk show on Derana TV and accused a then government Minister of corruption.
He made this revelation last night when he arrived at a warehouse which contained a huge quantity of sound equipment allegedly belonging to Gamini Senarath, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff.
Speaking to media and other persons gathered, he said that he was compelled to lead such “guerilla tactics” as there was a threat to the lives of those who revealed the corruption during the former government’s rule.
The controversy occurred on December 3, 2014, when a caller named Sunil from Matara gave a telephone call to Sports Minister Aluthgamage and leveled serious allegations against him saying the Minister’s wife was aware of all his alleged “malpractices”. Following the telephone call, Minister Aluthgamage walked out of the TV show, accusing Derana TV station of supporting the political campaign of the opposition.
Soon after the show, Aluthgamage lodged a complaint with the Mirihana Police. The Police later revealed that the telephone number of the caller is registered under UNP Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake’s name.
However, as an immediate damage control measure, Derana TV removed its Director (News) Shehan Baranage from daily operations of the channel following the incident. The channel also started an immediate inquiry in the matter.
