The single engine plane, which was found inside a container at Narahenpita Economic Centre last evening, originally belonged to film producer Chandran Rathnam and he had later handed it over to Yoshitha Rajapaksa, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s secnd son, Police sources said.
Giving a statement to Narahenpita Police in this regard, the film producer said Yoshitha Rajapaksa asked for the plane and that was why he gave it to the former President’s son.
Rathnam said the plane was made to be used at a private pilot school in partnership with a friend. It was reported that the aircraft was originally manufactured by the late Dr. Ray Wijewardena.
Acting on a tip-off police raided the economic centre on Tuesday (13) evening where they discovered a single engine plane, a vehicle allegedly belonging to the Carlton Sports Network (CSN), a broadcast truck and two a/c container trucks.
Upon inspection of one of the a/c container trucks, Police also found a file with invoices addressed to CSN for camera equipment amounting to several million rupees.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa, who is a Navy officer by profession, acts as a Director of the carlton Sports Network.
