UNP Parliamentarian Ajith P Perera told ‘Asian Mirror’ last night that he would reveal in Parliament the last minute attempts made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to retain power through military intervention.
“It was due to the conduct of the Attorney General and other senior state officials that they could not retain power through force,” Perera added.
“The former President summoned the Attorney General to the Temple Trees at around 2 am on Friday and ordered him to impose emergency regulations and prevent the Elections Commissioner from issuing election results. At this point, the Attorney General flatly refused to sign emergency orders,” the Parliamentarian said.
“It was after this refusal,” he added, “the President decided to discuss with UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and decided to leave Temple Trees.”
Perera, speaking to Asian Mirror, said he would disclose comprehensive details of the attempted military intervention in Parliament in the near future
