A fresh controversy has arisen with the news that former Army Commander and Leader of Democratic Party Sarath Fonsekha, who is deprived of civic rights - has voted at a polling booth in Piliyandala today. 

When Former Army Commander was jailed following the white flag he was deprived of his civic rights, making him non-eligible to vote at any election in Sri Lanka. 

It is still not clear as to how Fonseka's name appeared on the electoral list of the Colombo District. 

When contacted by Asian Mirror, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said he did not know whether Fonseka's name appeared on the electoral list of Colombo. 

When asked whether Fonseka has actually voted today, Deshapriya said the department does not "follow" voters on an individual basis. 

This has given rise to the speculation that it was purely a clerical error - which means Fonseka's name was not taken off the electoral list when he was deprived of his civic rights. 

However, after voting Fonseka stated that the Elections Commissioner and the Election Department have admitted that his civic rights still remain intact. 

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka could not vote at the last Presidential Election - of which he was a candidate - on the grounds that he was not a registered voter at that time.
