Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasised the need for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to revise its agreement with Sri Lanka, originally signed under the previous government, to align with more populist priorities. He stated that the current government, led by a president elected with a public mandate, should focus on renegotiating the terms of the agreement to better reflect the needs of the people.
This discussion took place during a meeting held in Colombo on 22 November between Premadasa, representatives of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), and a delegation from the IMF.
The IMF delegation included Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer, Deputy Mission Chief Katsiaryna Svirydzenka, Resident Representative Martha Woldemichael, and economic expert Manavi Abeywickrama, the Opposition Leader’s media division said.
The meeting featured an in-depth exchange of ideas on strategies to address Sri Lanka's current economic crisis and overcome bankruptcy. Key areas of focus included restructuring fiscal policies and exploring sustainable pathways for economic recovery.
Prominent members of the SJB, including Dr. Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Harshana Rajakaruna, S. M. Marikkar, Mujibur Rahman, and Kavinda Jayawardene, were present at the meeting. Additionally, Senior Professors Kennedy Gunawardena and Prasanna Perera from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura also participated in the meeting.
