The Vavuniya Citizens Committee (VCC) will hold a #FreeJeyakumary Public Protest, calling for her release and all those held in detention without charges, on Friday, Oct 10th, at 10am, opposite the Court House building, Vavuniya.
Jeyakumary, a Tamil activist who was accused f having terrorist links, has been kept in custody by Sri Lankan security establishments for several months. She was at the forefront in protests that were organized against alleged disappearances in the Northern province.
The organizers said they would continue with the protest despite the assault on its organizer G. Thevaraja last night.
“Particularly in light of last night’s (8th) attack on the President of the VCC, in yet another attempt by the State to intimidate and silence dissent in Sri Lanka, we must stand together in solidarity for the truth, justice and accountability,” the committee announced on Thursday.
G. Thevaraja, the President of the Vavuniya Citizens Committee (VCC) was attacked around 5.30-6pm yesterday (08), whilst he was riding his motorbike back home from his shop in Nedunkerny, #freejeyakumary campaign announced yesterday.
Thevaraja, the campaign said, was rushed to the Nedunkerny hospital immediately after the attack and was later transferred to the Vavuniya hospital to receive further treatment.
