President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that rural development and enhancing the social and economic well-being of rural communities are key priorities for the government this term. He shared these views during a discussion yesterday (5) at the Presidential Secretariat with members of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Association (SLAS), the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced.
The President stressed the importance of public officials working collaboratively with the government to achieve its development goals, noting that the expertise of these officials is essential in implementing government policies effectively. He highlighted a disconnect between government objectives and the conventional methods within the public service, and emphasized that for national development initiatives to succeed, public administration practices must evolve.
Combating fraud and corruption, he affirmed, is a top priority for the administration, adding that mismanaged projects have significantly impacted the economy. President Dissanayake assured that the political leadership would not interfere in the work of public officials, ensuring their independence in carrying out duties.
He underscored the unique role government officials play in regional development and urged a reduction in unnecessary public spending without compromising services.
The meeting was attended by SLAS members, including President Mahesh Gammanpila and Secretary Jayaveera Fernando.
