Supreme Court Criticizes IGP and Police Commission for Failing to Address Detainee Abuse

The Supreme Court has condemned the National Police Commission and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for failing to adhere to directives aimed at preventing police brutality.

During a recent hearing, the three-member bench, led by Justice S. Thurairaja, expressed frustration over the lack of progress and absence of reports from these authorities regarding the court’s orders to protect detainees from mistreatment.

This criticism came during the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by two student activists who claim they were abused by police during a 2009 protest at the University of Kelaniya.
