Former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pilleyan, appeared at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (22) to continue providing a statement regarding the Channel 4 documentary on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Pilleyan had previously visited the CID on November 20 but requested to give his statement in Tamil. Arrangements were subsequently made, and he was asked to return today.
The Channel 4 documentary, aired on September 6, 2023, presented serious allegations, including claims of complicity by senior Sri Lankan officials in the Easter Sunday bombings that killed over 260 people. Whistleblower Hanzeer Azad Maulana, a former spokesperson for Pilleyan’s group Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), was a key source in the documentary.
The CID launched its probe following a complaint filed with the Ministry of Public Security regarding the allegations. Pilleyan was initially summoned on November 12 but requested an alternate date through his attorneys.
On November 20, he spent around five hours at the CID recording his statement.
