Supreme Court Orders Attorney General to Submit Report on Assassination Plot Against Shani Abeysekara

The Supreme Court has directed the Attorney General to submit a report on the alleged conspiracy to assassinate retired Senior Superintendent of Police, Shani Abeysekara, the former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department. This order was issued during the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by Abeysekara.

The case was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Vijith Malalgoda, and Justice Murdu Fernando. President's Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, representing Abeysekara, presented evidence indicating that a report from the Police team of the National Authority for The Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses had revealed a plot to kill his client through a staged car accident.

Jayasuriya argued that the current security measures for Abeysekara are inadequate, given the severity of the threats against him. Currently, six police officers are assigned to protect Abeysekara, with two guarding his residence and four providing security during transportation. Despite this, Jayasuriya stressed that the protection is insufficient.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for August 29.
