Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Flees to India

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled to India following weeks of violent protests that have claimed nearly 300 lives. Confirmed by the Bangladeshi army and High Commission officials in Delhi, Hasina, accompanied by her sister, flew to India on a military helicopter to seek "safe shelter" away from her official residence.

The protests, which began with students demanding an end to the government job quota system, have escalated into deadly clashes with police and pro-government activists. On Sunday alone, at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, were killed in the capital, Dhaka. Further violence on Monday saw six more fatalities in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.
