The government has officially published the Online Safety (Amendment) Bill via a gazette notification. This bill, which has sparked significant debate, is seen by some as a potential threat to freedom of expression and constitutional rights.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the revised bill for gazette publication and agreed to present it in Parliament on July 23. Despite experts advocating for further amendments, no changes were incorporated at the committee stage.
On February 12, 2024, the Cabinet approved the drafting of amendments to the Security of Online Methods Act No. 9 of 2024. The draft bill, proposed by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, will now be presented to Parliament for approval.
