At the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, former President Donald Trump received the official Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election. Trump announced that his vice presidential running mate will be Ohio U.S. Senator J.D. Vance.

Trump praised Vance on his Truth Social platform, saying, "As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."

The convention commenced at the Fiserv Forum, just days after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and secured a significant legal victory with the dismissal of one of his criminal prosecutions by a federal judge.

Vance, once a critic of Trump, has become a staunch supporter, echoing Trump's unproven claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. On the convention floor, Vance and his wife Usha were warmly received by delegates. Vance is set to address the convention on Wednesday.

President Joe Biden, commenting from Joint Base Andrews, remarked that Vance is "a clone of Trump on the issues." Current polls indicate a tight race between Trump and Biden, with Trump leading in several crucial swing states.

Following the assassination attempt, Trump mentioned revising his acceptance speech to focus on national unity. He will formally accept the nomination in a prime-time speech on Thursday.
