The executive grade officers of the university non-academic staff have decided to call off their strike action. W.M.W. Wanninayake, President of the Association, announced that the decision was made following an agreement with the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Consequently, these officers will return to work starting Monday, the 15th.
Despite this , the Ministry of Finance has reiterated that allowances for non-academic staff cannot be increased at this time. This position was communicated in writing on Thursday, the 11th, by the Ministry in response to a letter from the UGC. The Ministry suggested that the issue of salary discrepancies could be addressed through a committee appointed by the President.
The Vice-Chairman of the UGC, Prof. Chandana Udawatte, said that all Vice Chancellors and trade union leaders were informed about the Finance Ministry's decision. In the same letter, UGC Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge urged the striking trade unions to resume work immediately, assuring them that their concerns could be resolved subsequently.
However, Dhammika S. Priyantha, Co-Convener of the University Trade Union Joint Committee, rejected the UGC Chairman's request. As a result, the strike continues into its 72nd day.
