Today, President Ranil Wickremesinghe inaugurated the second phase of the Kompanna Veediya flyover project. This phase, built by the Ministry of Transport and Highways at a cost of LKR 5,278 million, extends over the railway line between Kompanna Veediya and Justice Akbar Mawatha.
The project, executed by the Road Development Authority in partnership with Maga Engineering, aims to ease the chronic traffic congestion and delays caused by the frequent closure of railway gates for 109 daily train journeys.
Kompanna Veediya, a bustling commercial hub housing government offices, hospitals, religious sites, restaurants, and cinema halls, suffers from nearly three hours of daily traffic delays due to these railway gates. The new flyover is expected to facilitate smoother travel towards Galle Face and the Presidential Secretariat, significantly reducing commute times and boosting the national economy.
The inauguration ceremony saw the attendance of key officials, including Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Presidential Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka, and Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Highways Ranjith Rubasinghe.
