Train Operations Disrupted Due to Strike

Train operations across Sri Lanka have been disrupted due to strike initiated by station masters and other railway employees. The strike began at midnight on Tuesday, July 9, in response to demands for promotions and other issues.

Railway Traffic Superintendent N.J. Indipolage said that limited office trains would operate on Wednesday, July 10. The disruption led to the cancellation of all night mail trains on Tuesday night.

The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union, Sanjaya Jayasundara, stated that despite discussions with the Railways General Manager and other officials since June 2024, they have yet to receive a satisfactory response.

To mitigate the impact on commuters, the Department of Railways has arranged for season ticket holders to use their tickets on Sri Lanka Transport Board buses during the strike. Additionally, the Railways General Manager issued a statement warning that station masters who do not report to work on Wednesday will be considered to have left the service.
