Sri Lanka human rights activist Chirantha Amerasinghe has filed  a formal complaint against the State Intelligence Service (SIS), alleging wrongful arrest in 2020. Amerasinghe's arrest was reportedly based on a comment he made regarding forced cremations during the coronavirus pandemic, asserting that ‘COVID-19 does not spread in water.’

In a statement, Amerasinghe revealed that his arrest was executed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) based on SIS information, despite no formal complaint being filed against him. He further revealed that his remarks about a Channel 4 documentary on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks may have also contributed to his detention.

Amerasinghe has raised serious concerns about the actions of the SIS officials involved and has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch a thorough investigation into the incident.
