The National Peoples Power (NPP) has urged the government to address the concerns of teachers and principals currently striking over salary discrepancies, highlighting the detrimental impact on students' education.
Speaking at a Teachers Summit, NPP Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake underscored the critical role of the education sector, stating that teachers are entrusted with the crucial task of developing the country's human resources. He revealed that the NPP's manifesto includes a proposal to make teaching one of the top ten professions in Sri Lanka.
“Our country's most valuable asset is its human resources,” Dissanayake said. “Without enhancing this resource, our nation has no future, especially as we lack significant industrial and commercial resources like coal, gold, oil, and gas.”
He highlighted the essential role of the education sector in creating a workforce that meets national and global standards. Dissanayake also criticized the government's approach of using police force to suppress protests rather than addressing the underlying issues.
