Stand-up comedian Nathasha Edirisuriya has been cleared of all charges after the Attorney General informed the courts that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the case against her. The charges, brought forth by groups including Sinhala Ravaya, were based on allegations related to her performance at a comedy show last year.
Edirisuriya was initially arrested and prosecuted under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act, a move that drew significant attention and debate regarding freedom of expression in Sri Lanka.
In court, the Attorney General stated that a thorough review of the evidence revealed that it was not substantial enough to warrant continuing the legal proceedings against Edirisuriya. Consequently, the charges were dropped, and she was formally released from all allegations.
