President Ranil Wickremesinghe has re-appointed General Shavendra Silva as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) until December 31, 2024. The decision was formalized through an extraordinary gazette issued under Section 3 of the Chief of Defence Staff Act, No. 35 of 2009.

General Silva’s new term commenced on June 1, 2024, and will continue through the end of the year. He was initially appointed as the CDS on June 1, 2022.
