Sri Lanka President Urges Adherence to IMF Agreements for Economic Stability

President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka  said the crucial need for the country to adhere to International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreements to ensure economic stability. Speaking at the "Urumaya" freehold deeds and rice distribution program in Karawanella, he underscored that deviating from these agreements would harm the nation’s economic progress.

Wickremesinghe called on the opposition to avoid politically motivated criticisms and to support the economic transformation bill presented to Parliament. He highlighted that the government's current policies have already yielded significant economic recovery, with Sri Lanka's tourism industry booming and efforts underway to modernize agriculture to reduce poverty.

The President outlined ambitious economic targets, including achieving 5% growth by 2027 and reducing unemployment and extreme poverty significantly by 2035. He highlighted that the IMF agreements are integral to these goals and that failing to meet them would jeopardize international support.

During the event, 350 freehold deeds were distributed, and 800 low-income families received rice.
