In the early hours of June 2, 2024, a naval patrol in the Urumalei area of Talaimannar successfully intercepted an illegal migration attempt. The operation, conducted by SLNS Thammanna of the North Central Naval Command, led to the apprehension of five Sri Lankan nationals suspected of attempting to enter the island illegally.

The Navy also detained two individuals who were facilitating the illegal migration. The suspects, aged between 27 and 42, are residents of Mannar, Vavuniya, and Talaimannar.

 The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Talaimannar Police for further legal action.
