To regulate water levels and prevent future flooding, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered a stop to all new construction in the Kelani River valley. During an inspection tour of flood-affected areas in Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, and Ambatale, the President also directed officials to cease illegal landfills and relocate Mulleriyawa and IDH hospitals.

President Wickremesinghe assessed the welfare of flood victims and held a discussion at the Kolonnawa Sedawatta Weheragoda Rajamaha Viharaya. He instructed the immediate initiation of food distribution and prioritizing health and sanitation needs. The President suggested the use of aqueducts to divert floodwaters and stressed the swift relocation of individuals from flood-prone zones.

Senior Advisor Sagala Ratnayaka highlighted the need for specialized programs to protect property and ensure safety in shelters. He recommended mobile patrols and strict hygiene protocols for food distribution. A temporary relief center and measures to control post-flood diseases were mandated.
