UNICEF and National Youth Services Council Partner to Promote Youth-Led Climate Action in Sri Lanka

The National Youth Services Council (NYSC) of Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNICEF to promote “Youth-Led Climate Action” in the country. The partnership aims to empower children and youth, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, by enhancing climate awareness, fostering inclusivity in climate knowledge, and building essential skills.

The agreement was signed today by Mr. Christian Skoog, UNICEF Representative in Sri Lanka, and Pasindu Guneratne, Chairperson of NYSC. This collaboration shows the commitment to equip young people with the tools and knowledge needed to tackle climate change and environmental challenges.

“Young people, especially children, face the harsh realities of climate change daily. This partnership strengthens their ability to contribute meaningful solutions,” said Mr. Skoog. Guneratne echoed this sentiment, highlighting NYSC's dedication to empowering youth to drive community transformation and proactively address climate issues.

The initiative will involve a series of activities focused on raising awareness and developing skills related to climate change and environmental conservation. It also aims to improve collaboration between the government, civil society, and academia in addressing these issues. UNICEF's efforts are informed by the Sri Lanka Children’s Declaration on Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction, and NYSC will leverage its extensive network of youth clubs to support innovative activities.
