Sri Lanka Implements Extended Producer Responsibility for Plastic Packaging

The Central Environment Authority (CEA) has unveiled plans to enact legislation enforcing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging and bottles in Sri Lanka.

Under these laws, companies utilizing plastic packaging will be mandated to collect and manage them post-use, aiming to establish a closed-loop system for plastic waste. Chathura Malwana, Acting Deputy Director General of the CEA's Waste Management Division, affirmed that manufacturers will be held accountable for the entire lifecycle of their plastic products.

The legislation is expected to include a prohibition on littering plastic packaging and bottles, reinforcing efforts to combat plastic pollution. Mr. Malwana said  that these measures align with Sri Lanka's ongoing commitment to safeguarding the environment and benefitting its citizens.
