Continued Showery and Windy Conditions in Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has forecast that the prevailing showery and windy conditions over Sri Lanka will persist due to the active Southwest Monsoonal condition. Showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Southern provinces, with heavy showers above 100 mm likely in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Nuwara-Eliya district. In the Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts, showers or thundershowers are anticipated in the evening or night.

Strong winds ranging from 50-60 kmph are expected over the Western slopes of the central hills and in several provinces including Northern, North-central, Western, Southern, and North-western, as well as in the Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.

The sea areas around the island are forecast to be very rough, with wave heights of 2.5 to 3.5 meters from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Consequently, naval and fishing communities are advised against venturing into these sea areas until further notice due to the possibility of surges in nearshore areas.

The wind in the sea areas will be south-westerly with speeds of 40-50 kmph, increasing to 60-70 kmph at times. Showers or thundershowers are expected frequently in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo, leading to temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
