University Non-Academic Staff Strike Enters 27th Day

The strike by non-academic staff at universities across Sri Lanka continues for the 27th consecutive day, as their demands remain unmet. Over 15,000 staff members initiated the strike, seeking resolution on several critical issues, including the disbursement of an agreed monthly allowance and the implementation of a 15 percent salary cut retroactive to 2016.

The prolonged industrial action has severely disrupted academic activities at numerous universities nationwide, affecting thousands of students.

The Grama Niladhari Association has announced the continuation of its own trade union actions. Their demands focus on the establishment of a service constitution, the creation of a unique salary structure, and an increase in service-related bonuses to enhance the respect and recognition of their profession.
