59 Tree Falls Reported in Colombo

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has reported 59 incidents of trees falling within its jurisdiction due to ongoing heavy rains and strong winds. According to Engineer Manoj Ranasinghe, Director of Land and Environmental Development, 19 of these incidents occurred in Vihara Mahadevi Park.

Ranasinghe stated that an inspection identified over 200 trees at risk of falling, of which 100 have already been removed. The trees were assessed based on trunk features, and current falls were attributed to root weaknesses. The CMC is collaborating with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) to mitigate further risks and prevent additional damage.
